About this place
Combining shochu and ice in a glass, then topping it with Hoppy at your own pace, captures the quintessential spirit of a Japanese public tavern. At Standing Bar Sui in Kinshicho, many patrons order the Hoppy Full Set: a white or black Hoppy set bundled with ice, enough extra shochu for 2 refills, and a complimentary bonus pour. It is a hearty setup suited for an unhurried session. Despite the standing-bar name, seats are available inside, letting guests sit down and take their time over drinks and dishes.
The food menu is just as inviting. The deep-fried baby clams arrive crisp and packed with concentrated flavor, their savory crunch matching Hoppy or cold draft beer. Plentiful small plates cost in the 100s and 200s of yen; crunchy salted-sauce Chinese cabbage or chilled tanuki tofu sprinkled with tenkasu tempura crisps make easy starters. For meatier cravings, the kitchen serves large steamed chicken shumai dumplings ground on-site, fresh house-made tsukune meatballs grilled to order, and sautéed chicken liver glazed in a special sauce.
Orders can be placed verbally or via a smartphone-based QR code menu at your seat, letting you order dishes whenever you like. It makes a comfortable neighborhood retreat whether you are winding down after work or dropping by for a few quick, wallet-friendly plates.
